Atlantic.Net Changes Late Fee Policy

Effective October 1, 2003, Atlantic.Net will no longer charge a flat late fee of $10. Rather, the late fee will be calculated as 1.5 percent of the past due balance. For
instance, if the past due amount is $19.95, then the late fee would be $0.30.

This change will affect all dial-up and Web hosting customers. For more information, please review Atlantic.Net's Acceptable Use Policy online, or contact Atlantic.Net Member Services at support@atlantic.net or call toll-free (877) GO-ATLANTIC. That's (877) 462-8526.

Point, Shoot, Upload: Sharing Your Photos Online
Looking for an easy way to show off your photos to friends and family? Online photo albums just might do the trick! Not only can you host most images for free, but now others can view your images at their leisure. Try these easy steps to set up your own online photo album.

• First, choose a Web site to host your photos. With dozens available, you need only decide which one is right for you. Some popular ones are: Webshots, PhotoIsland, Yahoo! Photos, Ofoto, Fotki, and PictureTrail.
• Once you decide which Web site you like best, you need to register for an account. This should only take a couple minutes and usually requires only basic information such as name and e-mail address. Be aware that most of these sites let you host photos for free, so don't give out any credit card information unless you are purchasing an account.
• Next comes the fun part! After you scan your photos into your computer or use a photo CD, you get to upload them to the Internet. Most sites make it very easy for first-time users. Once you've created your account, you will most likely receive a welcome e-mail which will help you start your photo album.
• The first step is to log in to the site where you created your account. You will be brought to your home or member page, where you'll be able to transfer images to the site. Here, you'll see a link entitled "Upload Photos" or something similar. Go ahead and click on it.
• Now there will be several boxes with a "Browse" button next to them. Click on the browse button to access the photos on your hard drive or CD-ROM. It's helpful to know already where you have saved your pictures. To make it easier, label your folder something specific like "MyGradPix," and note where it's saved on your drive before you log in to the site.
• Once you have found the picture you want to upload, double-click on it. Now it will show up in the box next to the "Browse" button. Continue doing this for as many pictures as you want to upload right now. When you are finished, hit the "Upload Pictures Now!" button.
• Now your pictures are uploaded to the site. How you set up your online photo album depends on the program you are using, but you've already accomplished the most important part. You should now be able to edit your photo album and, once it's perfected, send the link to all your friends and family!

Surfer Dude Answers Your Questions
He's the master of the monitor, the teacher of technology, the wizard of the Web. He's Surfer Dude!

Q: Why does my computer always want to re-connect after each mail I send? When it was first set up, once I connected, it stayed connected until I disconnected it. Now, every time I send mail, I have to wait for it to dial up again.
A: Dude, first you need to know what e-mail program you're using. As Outlook Express is usually the culprit, I'll use it as an example. In Outlook Express, click on the Tools menu on the title bar. Then click on Options. Choose the Connection tab on this window, and make sure the setting "Hang Up After Sending and Receiving" is not checked. If it is, uncheck the setting and start the program over again. This should fix the problem!

Q:
How do I delete the "cookies" from my computer? — Trudy
A: Whoa, mon, cookies make me think of my mom's famous chocolate chips! Now I'm hungry, dude ... but back to your problem. On the Internet, cookies are data files stored on your machine by Web sites you've already visited. A Web site puts this cookie on your hard drive so that it can access it again when you return to the site. As this can be seen as an invasion of privacy, many Atlantic.Net members ask how to delete them.

If you are using Internet Explorer, click on Tools, then choose Internet Options. In the middle of this window you can use the button that says "Delete Cookies" to remove all cookies stored on your machine at that time. Not a permanent solution you say? Well, you can also edit your privacy settings by going to Tools, Internet Options, then clicking on the Privacy tab. From here you can set your Privacy settings to determine how your computer accepts cookies. You can even choose to reject all of them, but I wouldn't recommend that, since some sites must use cookies for certain functions.

Mom, send cookies! — SD

Tech Tip: Customize Your Outlook Express Buttons

Yes, you too can design your Outlook Express to do what you want. So what buttons do YOU use? Say you need that handy little print feature as a button, so you don't have to dig through menus to get to it? Well, here's how you get it!

• See that toolbar with the buttons like Create Mail, Reply, and Send/Receive? Use your mouse to right-click anywhere on this toolbar and bring up the submenu.
• From this submenu, choose Customize.
• A new window will pop up. This is the Customize Toolbar window. This might look confusing but it's really not! The column on the left shows you all the buttons you can have on a toolbar. The column on the right shows all the buttons you already HAVE on the toolbar.
• Scroll through the buttons on the left column until you find the Print button. Highlight this button and click the Add --> button in the middle of the page. The Print button should now appear in the right column.
• Exit this window, and voila! Now you should see a handy Print button on your toolbar!

These steps work for many other optional buttons ... go wild and see what works for you!

Set Up Your Own Shopping Cart with Miva Merchant
As a business owner, you’re always looking for new ways to move your products and services. As an Internet user, you know how many consumers you can reach via the Web. But just how can you sell your wares online? Well, if you’re an Atlantic.Net hosting customer with at least a Silver plan, you just use Miva Merchant — a feature that's included absolutely FREE upon request. Here’s how you can set up a simple Miva Merchant Shopping Cart on your Web site.

Getting Started First, contact Atlantic.Net Web hosting and request the Miva Merchant service. You will be given your own username and password. Once you receive this information, you can begin setting up your account. In addition to setting up your Identification and Owner information, you will have the ability to modify the following:
• Settings – Determine the defaults for weight, currency, sales tax, and basket timeouts.
• Layout – Choose your shopping cart layout.
• Maintenance Mode – Determine what your site will say when it’s down for maintenance and when maintenance will be performed.
• Order minimum – Allows you to dictate a minimum price or quantity your customer must spend to proceed to checkout.
• Customer Fields – Determine what information you require from the customer.
• State Based Sales Tax – Choose whether tax is determined on shipping state or billing state.
• Messages – Input your Welcome and Order Completed messages.
• Pagination – Decide how many products you’d like to display per page.
• Colors, Fonts, Images, Headers & Footers, and Buttons – These settings allow you to choose either Miva Merchant defaults or your own choices to more fully customize your page.
• Page Sections – Choose Navigation Bar, Category Tree or both to allow your customers to navigate around your storefront.
• Product List Layout – Determine what product fields (like price, weight, description) and buttons (like Add to Shopping Cart) to include for each product, as well as whether to include an image and inventory status.
• Search Layout and Related Product Layout – Determine which fields customers can use to search for a product or similar items.
• Customer Accounts – Determine what will show on the screen when your customers log in.

That's it! Once you've created your storefront, all you have to do is link your site to the Web address for your new Miva store.
