October's Scary Movies
It's the month for ghosts, goblins, and ghouls,
and so you'd expect perhaps another Halloween
flick. But October's films terrify with frightening fantasy and
disturbing realism.
Red
Dragon This movie, from the first book of the Hannibal
Lecter trilogy, stars Edward Norton as ex-FBI agent Will Graham,
who comes out of retirement to confront his nemesis Hannibal the
Cannibal (Anthony Hopkins) in order to catch the Tooth Fairy, a
ritualistic butcher as twisted and brilliant as the now-incarcerated
Lecter. The movie, opening Oct. 4, also stars Ralph Fiennes, Harvey
Keitel, and Mary-Louise Parker.
White
Oleander Ingrid Mangussen (Michelle Pfeiffer) is sentenced
to life in prison for poisoning her ex-boyfriend, forcing her teenage
daughter, Astrid (Alison Lohman) into foster care. Astrid and Ingrid
keep in touch, while Astrid struggles with new families, religion,
drugs, starvation, and forbidden love. But when Astrid has the chance
to get her mother back, will she lie to authorities for her return?
Also stars Renée Zellweger, Noah Wyle, and Robin Wright Penn.
In theaters Oct. 11.
Abandon
As a college student faced with taking exams, completing
her thesis, and competing for job interviews, Katie (Katie Holmes)
is under pressure. But when detective Wade Handler (Benjamin Bratt)
shows up investigating the two-year-old disappearance of her boyfriend
Embry (Charlie Hunnam), Katie is forced to face haunting memories.
Expect chills from this psychological thriller, opening Oct. 18.
