Surfer Dude Answers Your Questions
He's the PC professor, the gigabyte guru, the ruler of ROM. He's Surfer Dude!

Q: As I'm trying to get rid of SPAM (isn't everybody?), I first installed IHateSpam software; spent a year "teaching" it to recognize spam; found that I still get lots of it. Then my trusty ISP comes to the fore with SpamScope! TaDa! I thought: Here we go, finally Atlantic.Net has seen the light and will help its customers out. Alas! Your SpamScope does not work either. So now what does a poor dial-up customer do? — Daniel Hillen, Homosassa

A: Dudette, Spam is the bane of the internet! There is nothing out today that can totally block all the tricky ways a spammer knows to get his e-mail to you, but there are ways to slow them down.

An effective way is to set your e-mail client to search for certain words or phrases in your incoming e-mail. You can then set a "message rule" to delete this e-mail, or create a spam folder and relocate the e-mail there. This is possible on many e-mail programs including Outlook Express and our own Atlantic.Net web mail. Don't lose hope, however, as our Spamscope is being continually upgraded in order to compete with the next sinister spammer that comes along. Should you require any help in creating Message Rules, our representatives would be happy to assist you at 1-800-921-9328!

Q: I'm scrolling around the web finding all sorts of good info — and someone phones me. My phone rings, my internet connection is broken, and my dial-up tries to redial. How can I get the phone to ring 'busy' while I'm on the net and just leave me alone? — MA

A: Call Waiting is great, except when you're on the internet. The good news is that this is an easy fix! All you need to do is add *70 and a comma to the beginning of the phone number your computer dials to get you online.

If you use Win 95/98/ME, you can edit this by opening the Control Panel, and then opening Dial-Up Networking. Right click on the Atlantic.Net icon and choose "Properties." You can now add *70, to the beginning of the phone number. It should look something like this: *70,1234567.

If you use Win2000, this option is in Control Panel, and then Network and Dial-Up Connections. In WinXP, it's in Control Panel, and then Network Connections. In all cases, just right click the Atlantic.Net icon and choose "Properties" to edit your phone number. Our representatives would be happy to help you with this at 1-800-921-9328!

Gotta go now. Surf's Up!

Tech Tip: How to Make a Web site

It seems like everyone today has a Web site. Children even have their own Internet pages with pictures and links. But do you have a Web site? If not, here are some simple suggestions to create your own pages and imprint your identity in the digital world.

State Your Cause To start your very own Web site, you should have some idea what you want to put onto it. For example, do you want pages that contain photos of you and your family, or do you want a site that features your resume and personal background? These are just a few suggestions. Perhaps you have the largest collection of sticky-notes and you want to create a site dedicated to the collection of little yellow pieces of paper. You can do that too.

Plan It Out Remember when you made outlines for your five-paragraph essay assignments in high school? Well, here's your chance to use those skills. A simple flow chart of what pages you want and how they are going to link to one another is very important. You want your future users to be able to navigate your site with ease. This step can help you later on down the road when creating links.

You Need Space Every Web site requires some sort of storage space, usually on a computer server in some server farm. Atlantic.Net offers each account 15Mb of storage for whatever you want. To access your storage space, enter into your browser <<<<<<>>>>>>. I'll explain later how to get your files onto the server. If 15Mb isn't enough space, Atlantic.Net can offer additional space for a small fee.

Design It There are many different types of web page design programs available on the Internet*. Software can be purchased which will do the same thing. Microsoft has Front page; Macromedia has Dreamweaver MX. However, whichever program you choose, a basic understanding of HTML is a must. Books and other online material is available to understand the basics.

Post It Once you've created your Web site, now you need to post it to the Internet. Several FTP, or File Transfer Protocol, programs are available to transfer files from your computer to your Internet space. WS _FTP can be downloaded* from CNET at no cost. All you need is your username and password for Atlantic.Net, and you are set to upload your files and post your site. Once they are uploaded, your site is done. Congratulations.

*Note: Be careful where you download programs from. Computer viruses and worms have become increasingly prevalent on the Internet. Make sure you know the source you are downloading from and scan all files with a anti-virus program.

StorHost, Inc. @ Work with Atlantic.Net

A server is a server is a server, right? Then what is it that sets managed solutions providers apart? Customer service, says Tony Moura, co-owner of StorHost, Inc., a managed solutions provider.

StorHost, Inc., has been with Atlantic.Net for a year, being founded only half a year before that, and has grown by more than 400 percent. Since its inception, StorHost Inc. has bought two other companies: Renax Solutions (a software developer) and Typical Geek (developer of an invoice and billing solutions software). The companies currently boast about 3,000 clients yet only employees five people.

StorHost, Inc., builds custom made servers to meet clients needs using only Atlantic.Net's multi homed premium bandwidth. There are no packaged deals, Moura said, which keeps operation costs low. The length of a managed server's contract is no less than one year, and some are as long as four years.

"Clients wouldn't sign those contracts if they didn't believe in us as a business," Moura said.

StorHost, Inc., also prides itself in its fast reaction time and 24/7/365 customer support. If there is a problem it goes directly to Moura and ultimately something gets done right away, he said.

Moura and his partners each have more than 12 years experience in the technology industry and are able to provide custom solutions that others in the industry cannot. The company can do a complete server crash repair and recover all of the client's data in less than 20 minutes. As a small niche, StorHost, Inc., has the ability to react faster whereas bigger companies are too busy dealing with 10,000 servers at a time, Moura said.

"In a saturated market, what sets you apart is customer service and the quality of the products you provide," Moura said. "Otherwise you're just a part of the crowd."

StorHost, Inc., occupies a full cabinet at Atlantic.Net's Data Center, meaning the company has the capability to host up to 42 one unit servers with Atlantic.Net.

"Stop Calling Me!!!"
Have you been receiving phone calls from solicitors? You know what we're talking about. You sit down for dinner with your family and the phone rings. You answer the call thinking it might be an emergency from a loved one and it turns out to be a credit card company trying to enroll you in their latest chemical element card. We've all been there. But now there is a way to stop it.

Last year, the U.S. Congress passed the Do Not Call Act which allows Americans to register their phone numbers into a national database to prevent solicitors from calling them. Over 50 million Americans have already enrolled.

To add your name and number to the list, visit www.donotcall.gov. There is no cost to register your phone number and you can even list your cell phone. So why not stop those irritating and annoying calls today.
