E-mail Etiquette:
Minding Your P's & Q's Online
>>>Have a pal who just has to
forward cute e-mails, but
>>>can't be bothered to "cut and paste," forcing
you to >>>scroll endlessly and click through countless
forwards >>>to get to the actual message? Wait a minute!
You >>>are that friend? Then try these pointers
to help you >>>mind your e-mail P's and Q's, and perhaps
save a
>>>valuable friendship.
Keep the Internet beautiful. Resist
the urge to forward every joke, chain letter, "magic"
trick, petition, and poem to all your friends. When your buddies
pass along their
e-mail addresses to you and say "Keep in touch," it's
not likely they mean for you to load up their inboxes with
e-junk.
Use the subject line to let recipients know what your
e-mail is about. If you need someone to take action, use "REQ:"
in your subject line. For informational notes, use "FYI."
Set a casual or professional tone as appropriate. Obviously,
you don't want to send a message saying "Hey dude, hire me,"
with your attached resume unless you're responding to one
from the company that said, "Hey dude, we're hiring."
Don't send large attachments without asking first, or
zip them up
so they're quick to download. If possible, send a link to a site
instead, and always include "http://" so Web addresses
will appear as interactive hyperlinks.
Set your program to include the original message text
when you reply to an e-mail. That way the recipient will know
which message you're referencing. If you use Outlook or Outlook
Express, go to Tools/Options to adjust these settings.
DON'T TYPE ALL UPPERCASE LETTERS. It makes your message
difficult to read and implies that you're shouting.

Tech Tip: Using Microsoft
Internet Explorer
Here's a look at four techniques that may help you navigate the
Web more easily if you use Microsoft Internet Explorer.
1) If you're looking for a specific word or phrase on a Web page,
press CTRL + F. Then type the words into the search box.
2) You can easily create a shortcut on your desktop to any Web
page. Once the page is loaded, right-click your mouse, and choose
"Create Shortcut."
3) To save an image that you like on a Web page, put your cursor
over the graphic, right-click your mouse, and choose "Save
Picture As..." You can also save an entire Web page by selecting
File/Save As from the menu on the top of your browser.
4)
If you use Internet Explorer version 5.0 or later and you're visiting
a "dot-com" site, try this time-saving tip. Type only
the main part of the site's domain name into the address bar at
the top of your browser. For example, type "weather"
if you want to visit Weather.Com, as illustrated above. Then,
press CTRL + Enter. Internet Explorer will automatically fill
in the "http://www." and the ".com" to complete
the Web address for you.
