Surfer Dude Answers Your Questions
He's the PC professor, the gigabyte guru, the ruler of ROM. He's Surfer Dude!

Q:
Hello Dude:
I have a worm called AGOBOT and need a way to get rid of it. Can you help? — Eric

A: Dude, worms, trojans, and viruses, oh my. Of course, the best thing to do is update and run a pre-installed virus program such as McAfee or Norton. However if that is not an option, there is a free virus scan and removal program available at http://housecall.antivirus.com. We are not affiliated with them, so we cannot provide technical support, but we do also recommend you research the worm on the net, as many sites will include helpful instructions on how to remove malware and viruses. But as always, the best prevention is to be careful and to always have a virus protection program already on your computer.

Q: Speaking of Spam ... Why can't they, with today's technology, track down these abusers and stop them through their ISP? If I started spamming ... I wonder how long it would take atlantic.net to close my connection?
Ralph Stallsworth, N. Ft. Myers, Fla.

A: Man ... over 2/3 of e-mail sent today is spam. This monster of the Internet shows no sign of being deterred, even by the more creative spam killers we have available today. In hunting down spammers, all ISPs are hampered by the many ways these people have to hide their tracks. This includes using innocent people’s computers to send spam and sending spam using someone else’s name. Even email headers are not enough to track down most spammers today, simply because they're coming up with new ways to spam you every day. Atlantic.Net is constantly refining our spam filter, Spam Scope, to combat the newest spamming methods.

Gotta go now. Surf's Up!

Employee Profile

Sam Guiliano, a native of Tampa, Fla., has been working in our Tampa office since it opened in February 2003. Sam was the first employee hired by Atlantic.Net for the Tampa office and is a Senior Account Executive.

Sam and his wife Vickie have three children, Shayne 28, Derek 25, and Samantha 21. Two of his children are currently living in the Boston area and one resides at home in Tampa.

Even with the children out of the house, Sam likes to keep his home full. He owns four cats; the oldest, Cali, just turned 19! Just to mix it up a bit, Sam also owns a dog named Milo, a British terrier.

In his spare time, Sam enjoys coaching little league baseball and football in the Tampa area, which he has been doing for several years.

Some of Sam’s favorite things are the color teal, the scent of hazel and Thursdays.

If given $1,000 Sam says he would, "Give the money to Robert for suggesting me for this profile." (Robert Young is our sales manager and is Sam's supervisor).

Tech Tip: What Surf Account Tools Can Do For YOU!

Have you been wanting to make changes to your Atlantic.Net account, but weren't sure where to start? The Account Tools page on Surf has many great tools to help you improve your account information and service.

Manage — The Account Management page can help you update and maintain our Atlantic.Net account. With this page, you can view payment history, the current status of your account, and update and change your billing address.

Time is Money — Do you want to know how much time you've been spending online? The Time Usage page allows you to review the amount of time spent online for the previous six months. Determine how often you are online, and also whether you need to upgrade to an unlimited usage account for $19.95.

Change is Good — When was the last time you changed your password? The longer you have the same password, the more likely it is to end up in the wrong hands. Change your password or add an e-mail address with our Account Tools Control Panel. Make your account as safe as possible and change your password at least every six months.

Stay in Touch — Traveling for several days or even weeks can load up your mail box with a lot of e-mail. Check out our Access Numbers page to find dial-up service while you're away from home.

Save Space — Your unlimited access account gives you 15Mb of web space. Check the total amount of space you are using by utilizing our Check Usage page. Determine if you are approaching your maximum usage and perhaps look into other web hosting options Atlantic.Net offers.

If you have any more questions, contact our Member Services Department at 1-877-462-8526.

What VoIP Can Do For You!!!

Perhaps you've seen commercials for free long distance. Is there such a thing? Maybe.

A fast-growing service being offered by Atlantic.Net is VoIP or Voice over Internet Protocol. This service allows businesses to communicate long distance phone calls over the same connection they use to connect to their Internet without the hassel of additional charges per minute.

For a traditional long distance call, you pick up the phone, dial a long distance number and your call goes through your local telephone company to a long distance service provider. They charge you a connection fee and a per-minute charge and you are then billed on your monthly phone bill.

VoIP can simplify this process. This service works with Atlantic.Net's broadband Internet options such as DSL, ISDN, frame relay, or point-to-point T1/T3 to enable you to use your Internet connection for long distance voice communications. By adding some hardware, you can use your Internet connection for both voice and data.

The advantages to VoIP are significant. Businesses can save money on their long distance phone bills. Furthermore, most users of VoIP indicate clearer phone calls because the signal is digital not analog.

Keep 911 Close at Hand
It seems like everyone today has a cell phone. You can't go driving on the highway or walking down the street for 30 seconds without seeing a cell phone. Even more irritating is the phone manufacturers making new models every month that you absolutely have to have.

But did you know you can still use your old phone? If the model of your old phone is out of date, most cell phone companies donate them to charities as a tax credit. However, you can keep the phone and use it for emergencies.

According to federal law, cell phone companies must execute all emergency or 911 phone calls, even if you don't have service on the phone or with the nearest tower service. This law allows older phones to be used for 911 calls even if the phone doesn't have a regular service plan.

A good way to take advantage of this law is to take old phones, charge their batteries, and keep them in every vehicle. This way, if your new phone battery is dead and you are stranded, you can make an emergency 911 call with the old phone.
