How to Avoid the Biggest
E-mail Blunders
What better way than a mass e-mail to tell 12 friends about the
all-night luau they missed? But be careful before you hit "Send,"
or that message to your buddy Grant could end up with Grandma
instead. And unless she's really cool, she may frown upon reading
about the three lampshades you wore last night. Try these pointers
to help you avoid e-mail accidents.
Good grammar and spelling form an impression. If you don't
want to appear careless, take an extra moment to check both. Most
e-mail programs have a built-in spell-checker that automatically
proofs messages for you and points out misspelled words.
Say what you mean. E-mail does not convey emotions. If
you joke with someone about carrying an M-16 and don't include
an emoticon
or "HA! HA!" in your message, be prepared for a visit
from the ATF.
Beware of potential hardware conflicts. Make sure the
recipient can read HTML messages, open your attachment, etc. before
you hit Send.
Pause before hitting the Send button. Make sure your message
is going to the person you intended (remember Grandma), that it's
articulate and to the point, and that it carries the proper tone.

Tech Tip: Pop-Up Ad Filters
Here's a nifty trick that will burst an advertiser's bubble. If
you're tired of pop-up (or pop-under)
advertisements interfering with the content you really want to
see online, try one of the software programs created to exterminate
what's bugging you. Ad filters run in the background while you
surf, detecting and hiding any extra browser windows that attempt
to open as you navigate Web pages. Visit ZDNet for a
list of ad filters, or try a keyword search for "popup
ad filters" at CNET's Download.Com.
You'll find software that you can download for free or for a fee
following a complimentary trial period.
