Surfin' Safari

For every issue, the Surf's Up team tracks down the coolest sites on the Web. Point and click your way to this month's finds.

www.freetranslation.com - Billed as the "fastest web-based translation available," this virtual interpreter lets you enter text or a Web site address and then converts it to another language such as Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Norwegian, or Italian.

www.realage.com - Are you as chronologically young (or old) as you feel? Take a few minutes to fill out this free questionnaire and find out whether your lifestyle is adding or subtracting years from your biological age.

www.behindthename.com - This site is a searchable database of first names, their origins, and meanings.

www.copykat.com - Learn how to make your favorite restaurant dishes at home. Enter a keyword or search by categories including appetizers, breads, salad dressings, and desserts. Bon appetit!

www.webbyawards.com - This site was created to honor other Web sites. You can browse through the nominees and even vote for your favorites on-line! Then, you can watch the live webcast on July 18th when the winners are announced.

Tech Tip: How to save time on the Web
If you use Internet Explorer version 5.0 or higher, you can get to the next Web site a little faster with this nifty trick. Instead of typing an entire domain name (for example, http://www.sony.com) into the address bar, simply type the site's name (Sony) and press Ctrl+Enter to automatically add the "http://www" and ".com" on each side of the word.

Mac Tip: Build Your Own Home Page
If you subscribe to Atlantic.Net's Unlimited Plan for $19.95, you get 5 MB of Web real estate to build your own home page. If you're ready to break ground on your site, you'll want to check out FTP Client from Vicomsoft. With this Mac-compatible program, you can publish pages and updates to your site. Vicomsoft offers a free trial period of FTP Client Pro with 100 launches or 30 hours of continuous use before it switches to shareware. The program features a very simple drag-and-drop interface and retails for only $30 if you want to keep using it after the free demo period. Click here to download. Remember to upload files to your free space through members.atlantic.net using your username and password. Have fun!

SPOTLIGHT: Solutions for Your Business
This is the fourth installment in a new Surf's Up series highlighting enhanced business services that can help you work smarter. Here's how Atlantic.Net helped freshen up one organization's Web site. Meet Laurence Steel, a Gainesville attorney whose American Adoption Agency, Inc. helps children from Kazakhstan, Russia, and Bulgaria find homes in the U.S and abroad.

Surf's Up: Mr. Steel, what were your goals originally when you decided to have your Web site redesigned?
LS: We wanted a site that was easy for the public to look at and to use, and a design firm that we knew would be around, where we could work with people who were professional. We originally had used a company that was competent but wasn't large enough to maintain and host the site the way we wanted to do it.

Surf's Up: How did you choose Atlantic.Net?
LS: Through a recommendation from someone who had previously used Atlantic.Net.

Surf's Up: What was it like working with Atlantic.Net?
LS: I found the people very friendly. They understood what we wanted, and I worked one-on-one with the designer. It was a simple, relaxed process. She kept me up-to-date with what she was doing, and periodically I asked her the progress of the Web site. But more often than not she contacted me before I contacted her to tell me what was going on.

Surf's Up: Would you work with Atlantic.Net again?
LS: Yes, I would…and I am. Now we're doing a bigger interactive site that deals with legal services, and Atlantic.Net will host both sites. I realize now that in certain areas, basically, you get what you pay for. So if somebody says they can put your site together for 500 bucks, then you need to be very careful.
