Do you really need another reason to stay informed these days? Get the low-down on what's happening in America with these online government resources.

www.whitehouse.gov - Meet the president, vice president, first lady, and the Cabinet; take a tour of the White House; get briefed on important social issues like education reform and Medicare; and look over the president's speeches - all while surfing the Web in your underwear.

www.whitehousekids.gov - Let the Bush and Cheney family animals take your kids on a guided tour through this site specifically designed to help them learn more about America's first family and inform them about issues that affect the country.

www.firstgov.gov - This is the mother load of all government sites, and it will help simplify your Internet search down to a few clicks. Check out the possibilities: renew your car tag, apply for financial aid, check flight delays, search for product recalls, file a patent, shop for seized assets, and review government publications.

www.loc.gov/global/executive/fed.html - Get links associated with the executive branch of government. Some include the Department of Defense, Department of Agriculture, and the National Endowment for the Arts.

www.congress.org - Wouldn't you like to know what decisions are being made and who's making them? We encourage you to be nosy. So read about your elected officials, find out what they're voting for, and write them to share your opinion.

www.loc.gov - This is the official site of the Library of Congress. But wait! It's so much more. Researchers, librarians, and teachers have areas especially for them. If you're interested in global literature, check out digital collections from around the world. There's even a kiddy corner dedicated to learning about America.

www.house.gov - Who be in da house? The House of Representatives that is. Get contact information for all members, learn about different committees, and find out what's on the weekly agenda.

www.senate.gov - This club may have an air of exclusivity, but that doesn't mean they can do whatever they want. They work for you. Check up on them and find out what kind of laws they're making.

www.statelocalgov.net/index.cfm - Check out this comprehensive directory of state and local governments and their offices. You'll also find links to national organizations like the National Civic League and the American Public Works Association.

Tech Tip
:
Give Bulk E-Mail a Detour with MS Outlook
Do you collide with spam on a daily basis? Then, redirect your inbox traffic by creating a Junk Mail folder with Microsoft Outlook. Here's how to give unwanted messages an alternate route, so you never have to meet them on the road again!

1. Open your Inbox and choose Tools/Organize. A "Ways to Organize..." menu will expand down from the top of the screen.
2. Click on Junk E-mail in the list of choices on the left.
3. Use the drop-down menus to force Junk and Adult Content messages to "Automatically move to Junk E-Mail."
4. After you've created these two filtering rules, choose "Turn On" to activate them. Outlook will automatically scan your messages for phrases such as "money back" and "over 18" and move potential spam mail to a Junk E-mail folder.

Hint: You can add to the list of phrases that Outlook uses to screen your mail, or you can reroute messages sent by a particular sender. For more information, use the Microsoft Outlook Help files located in the Help menu.
