Jan. 21, 2002: Celebrate Peaceful Revolution The son of a minister and schoolteacher, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta, Ga., on Jan. 15, 1929. King's parents taught him to treat all people with respect, but as a black child growing up in the South, he faced bigotry every day. King later studied the teachings of Mohandas Gandhi and became a proponent for peaceful revolution. He faced arrests, bombings, and physical assaults as he fought for equal rights for all Americans. His peaceful protest marches were sometimes dealt violent blows by law enforcement and others. Once these attacks were televised, many in the nation began to see racism in a different light. On Aug. 28, 1963, King delivered his famous "I have a dream" speech before a crowd of 250,000 on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. On Dec. 10, 1964, King won the Nobel Peace Prize. On April 4, 1968, he was shot and killed outside his hotel room in Memphis, Tenn. Four days after King's assassination, Rep. John Conyers, a Democrat from Michigan, submitted the first legislation proposing King's birthday as a holiday, but it took another 15 years before President Ronald Reagan signed a bill making the third Monday in January a legal holiday to celebrate the birth and life of Dr. King. The holiday was first celebrated on Jan. 20, 1986. For information on how you can make King's birthday "a day ON, not a day off" visit the Corporation for National and Community Service.
