Jan. 21, 2002: Celebrate Peaceful Revolution

The son of a minister and schoolteacher, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta, Ga., on Jan. 15, 1929. King's parents taught him to treat all people with respect, but as a black child growing up in the South, he faced bigotry every day. King later studied the teachings of Mohandas Gandhi and became a proponent for peaceful revolution. He faced arrests, bombings, and physical assaults as he fought for equal rights for all Americans. His peaceful protest marches were sometimes dealt violent blows by law enforcement and others. Once these attacks were televised, many in the nation began to see racism in a different light.

On Aug. 28, 1963, King delivered his famous "I have a dream" speech before a crowd of 250,000 on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, D.C. On Dec. 10, 1964, King won the Nobel Peace Prize. On April 4, 1968, he was shot and killed outside his hotel room in Memphis, Tenn. Four days after King's assassination, Rep. John Conyers, a Democrat from Michigan, submitted the first legislation proposing King's birthday as a holiday, but it took another 15 years before President Ronald Reagan signed a bill making the third Monday in January a legal holiday to celebrate the birth and life of Dr. King. The holiday was first celebrated on Jan. 20, 1986.

What's All This Talk About VoIP?

It may just sound like yet another odd-sounding tech-ese acronym, but VoIP really can do a business good. If your company pays monthly bills for voice communications with satellite branches, read on to find out how you can lower those costs while taking advantage of the Internet access you're already paying for.

Q. What is VoIP?
A. VoIP stands for "Voice over Internet Protocol." Basically, you add some hardware to the broadband Internet access you're already paying for, then you can use your connection to the Net for both voice and data.

Q. What are the advantages of VoIP?
A. VoIP saves you money by eliminating toll-call charges and reducing the need for long distance lines on a multi-line phone system. In addition, VoIP unifies your communications over one network, so you get more out of the Internet service you're already paying for. Finally, VoIP makes your network more flexible, because the lines have multiple uses—meaning you can adjust your bandwidth and number of voice lines as needed.

Q. What types of companies can benefit the most from VoIP?
A. Companies with multiple branches that do lots of communication between those sites will benefit the most from VoIP.

Q. What are the major differences an end-user will notice?

A. The only difference your employees may notice is an increase in the clarity of their phone line, because the transmission is digital rather than analog. Other than that, they'll pick up a handset, get a dial tone, and call a number as usual.
