Feb. 14, 2002: Valentine's Day Around the World Think Americans have a lip-lock on this lovers' holiday? Think again. Check out these Valentine's Day traditions from other countries. Korea - On Feb. 14, women give candies to their boyfriends. On March 14, known as "White Day", men give chocolates, and sometimes profess their love, to their girlfriends. On April 14, those without mates celebrate "Black Day" by eating Jajang noodles with their friends. Great Britain - To dream of their future husbands, women used to pin bay leaves to their pillows and eat eggs with salt replacing the removed yolks. They also wrote several men's names on slips of paper, wrapped them in clay, and dropped them into the water, believing their future husband's name would be the one to pop up first. Denmark - Sweethearts swap poems and candy snowdrops. Sometimes they send laughable notes called "gaekkebrev," signing them using only dots. If a recipient correctly guesses who sent the note, he or she also receives a candy egg at Easter time. Italy - Here, many couples get engaged on Valentine's Day. Some shops sell gifts such as china baskets and cups filled with Valentine candies and tied with ribbon. France - Traditionally, the first young man seen by a girl on the morning of Valentine's day became her boyfriend, called a cavalier or valentin for the year. At year end, engagement usually followed. Scotland - Couples exchange Lover's Knots made of ribbon or paper. Wales - Spoons are given to women as engagement gifts. Germany - Women plant onions in several pots on Valentine's Day. Each onion is given a man's name and put near the fireplace. The first onion to sprout will be a woman's intended. Tech Tips: A Few Tech Terms You May or May Not Know Unless you're in the biz, it's hard to keep up with all the buzz words working their way around the Net. So we've assembled several basic terms you should know. Browser - Short for Web browser, a software application used to locate and display Web pages. The two most popular browsers are Netscape Navigator and Microsoft Internet Explorer. Both are graphical browsers, which means that they can display graphics as well as text. Internet - A global network connecting millions of computers. More than 100 countries are linked into exchanges of information. The Internet is decentralized by design. Each Internet computer, called a host, is an independent member of the global Internet community. DSL - Digital subscriber lines use sophisticated science to pack data onto copper wires. This "last-mile technology" is used for connections from a telephone switching station to a home or office. DSL offers high speeds compared to dial-up modems, that is of up to 32 Mbps for downstream traffic, and from 32 Kbps to over 1 Mbps for upstream traffic. HTML - Short for HyperText Markup Language, the authoring language used to create pages on the World Wide Web. HTML defines the structure and layout of a Web document by using a variety of tags and attributes. Most tags format and layout information in a Web page. A <P> tag makes paragraphs, while <I> </I> italicizes fonts. Tags also specify "hypertext links," which direct users to other Web pages with only a mouse click on an image or word. Server - A computer or device on a network that manages its resources. Servers are often "dedicated," meaning they perform no other tasks besides their server tasks. For example, a file server is a device dedicated to storing files. Any user on the network can store files on this server. A print server manages one or more printers, a network server manages network traffic, and a database server processes database queries. For more information, visit Webopedia.
