Tech Tip: Optimize Your Internet Connection
Getting slower connection speeds? Does
it ever seem like you can't stay online as long as you used to?
It may be time to update your "modem," the device in your
computer that helps you connect to the Web! Updating your modem
is easy, and best of all, it's free!
But what if you don’t even know what kind
of modem you have? No problem! Just follow these steps to find
out which modem is installed on your computer.
For Windows 95, 98, and ME:
• Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel, then Modems.
For Windows 2000:
• Click on Start, Settings, Control Panel, then Phone and
Modem Options.
• Click on the Modems tab.
For Windows XP:
• Click on Start, Control Panel, switch to Classic View,
then click on Phone and Modem Options.
• Click on the Modems tab.
For Mac:
• Click on Apple, Control Panel, then Modem.
Now that you know the name of your modem, it's time
to go online and download an updated "driver," a program
that tells your modem how to function. Modem manufacturers are
constantly releasing new drivers to fix bugs and enhance the way
your modem works.
Check out these sites to find out about drivers
that are available for your modem.
You can also search the Web for modem drivers.
• Open a search engine page, such as Surf's Search
the Web tools.
• Type the name of your modem in the search field.
• Type the word “drivers” after the name of
your modem.
• Hit the Enter key on your keyboard.
And off you go to the user-friendliest site you
can find to give you the information you need. Once you download
the drivers, follow the step-by-step wizard to give your modem
new life! If you have any trouble updating your drive, simply
contact your modem's manufacturer for help.

Creating a Shipshape
Online Presence
Matt Vaughan knew what he had to do when he
came to work for Ocean
Shipholdings, Inc. — he needed to make the company more
attractive to potential customers. Giving the company’s
Web site a makeover was just one of the steps toward that goal.
Vaughan, a business technology
administrator, looked to Atlantic.Net for his Web design
needs because he had seen a few samples of previous
Web design projects. “They had an impressive design
team, which was apparent in the work spotlighted on their Web
site,” Vaughan says.
He also says it was an added bonus that Atlantic.Net
hosts OSI’s Web site, so switching over to the new site
was even easier.
Vaughan says he had a few sample sites that he liked,
and Atlantic.Net’s design team helped tailor the ideas to
fit his company’s needs. “A lot of people would say
the flash intro is what really stands out. It really gets one’s
attention,” Vaughan says.
After working closely with the Atlantic.Net team, Vaughan got
just what he wanted: a site that attracted viewers and was easy
to update. “I also really like the administration template
that allows us to add press releases and new job opportunities
without any additional development work.”
Most importantly, he says the Web site represents
Ocean Shipholdings, Inc. “The
site shows our commitment to excellence, our pride in what we
do, and our experience in the industry.”
