Surfer Dude Answers Your Questions
He's the PC professor, the gigabyte guru, the ruler of ROM. He's Surfer Dude!

Q: Why, oh why, when I send forwards with pictures, some times they go through, and other times not? Help! — Diane.

A:
Dudette, this is a sticky one! It'll depend on if these pictures are being sent as attachments or presented in the body of the e-mail. If it's a file attachment, try saving the attachment to your computer, then manually attaching it to a new e-mail. If these pictures are in the body of the e-mail, they might reside on a server out there in cyberspace and aren't accessible. You also want to make sure your e-mail program has the proper settings to send them. If you're using Outlook Express:

1. Click on Tools from the menu bar and choose Options.
2. Click the Send tab
3. Make sure your Mail Sending Format is set to HTML and click on the HTML Settings button.
4. "Send Pictures with Messages" should be checked

Hope this helps dudette in your forwarding adventures.

Q: We are moving to Louisville, Ky., around August 27 or 28.  Do you service that area?  Please respond.  Thanks — Mary D.

Tech Tip: The Laptop Shop

Whether purchasing a laptop/notebook computer for yourself or the soon-departing college kid, there are several decisions that have to be made. This guide will help you to discern what you want and how to get it.

Things to Remember There are a couple things that should be kept in mind when looking to purchase a laptop computer.

1.) Laptop computers are almost always more expensive than a desktop computer. This is because you pay for portability.

2.) Laptops are hard to upgrade. With the exception of a few components, once a laptop is built, it's hard to upgrade later on.

3.)Too many bells and whistles can cause too many headaches. It's not necessary to get everything available at the time of purchase. Only purchase what you are going to use.

CNET's handbook for buying a notebook will help shed light on customizing conundrums.

For Home Users Many home users are purchasing laptops to replace or supplement their existing desktop computers. CNET recommends at least 128Mb of memory, a large hard drive for digital videos and photos, at least a 14-inch display, swappable CD-RW and/or DVD drives and Windows XP Home edition.

For the Student CNET recommends for students and those purchasing on a tight budget to look at getting the most bang for their buck. They recommend looking at laptops with at least 256Mb of RAM, a large hard drive, CD-RW for burning audio CDs, wired and wireless networking for networked classrooms and dorms and Windows XP Home edition or Apple Mac OS X.

For the Traveler If you're someone who's on the road frequently, then CNET suggests the following: a Pentium III-M processor, 12-inch display, 128Mb of memory, wired and wireless networking, an extra battery, port replicator and Microsoft Windows XP Professional and Office XP Professional.

For the Business Those looking to purchase a laptop for business reasons should keep in mind: a Pentium M processor, 256Mb of memory, a mid-sized hard drive, swappable CD-RW/DVD drive, wired and wireless networking, an extra battery and Microsoft Office and Windows XP Professional.

For the Gamer/Programmer If you are planning on using your laptop as a true desktop than you'll need more from it. CNET recommends a Pentium M, 4-m or desktop P4 processor or a Apple G4 processor. They also recommend 512Mb to 1Gb of memory, 15-inch or larger display, an advanced graphics accelerator, the largest and fastest hard drive available, multimedia connectors, Microsoft Windows XP or Mac OS X, Microsoft Office XP Premium and Adobe Photoshop CS.

The above are only suggestions and should not be the set guidelines. Companies like Dell and Gateway can provide detailed explanations about their products and what is right for you.

Cisco – A Networking Powerhouse

Cisco Systems, Inc. is the leading manufacturer of networking equipment for the Internet.  They have been at the vanguard of Internet network technology development since the company started in 1984, and they continue that tradition today.

Cisco specializes in the production, management and technological innovation of DSL, switches, access server and is also the leader in the development of Internet routers.

"We are a Cisco powered company," said Aaron Gee, senior network engineer for Atlantic.Net. "Less than one percent of companies meet that standard. This allows Atlantic.Net to have access to technology and
support that other companies simply don't have."

"Our network's design, coupled with the outstanding reliability of Cisco's network hardware make for an extremely efficient and robust network. There have been days that we have experienced multiple failures, yet the customers never knew because our Cisco equipment was able to route around the problems. I guess that is the biggest compliment you can give Cisco, you almost forget your routers are there because they just work" Aaron said.

Cisco's bullet proof solutions have been meeting the demands placed on them by the Internet of today and Atlantic.Net customers.  Cisco's equipment in the Atlantic.Net data center stop denial of service attacks, and solve bandwidth issues everyday.

Atlantic.Net recently added filters and blocks to our Cisco access servers to help protect dial-up customers. These Cisco access servers are now helping block harmful viruses and the filtering machines help reduce the spreading of viruses over the network.
