The Mexican

.. A thoroughly enjoyable shaggy-dog story. Downtrodden Jerry Welbach (Brad Pitt) copes with a dual dilemma: his girlfriend Samantha (Julia Roberts) has just dumped him to pursue solo ambitions in Las Vegas, and a manipulative mobster has ordered Jerry to Mexico to retrieve a coveted antique pistol that carries a legacy of legend, death, and danger. Jerry soon has his hands full with bandits, bloodshed, and a grizzly hound dog that vanishes and reappears with amusing regularity. En route to Vegas, Samantha's taken hostage by a burly assassin (James Gandolfini) who's attached to the gun-fetching scheme and is, in more ways than one, not who he seems to be.

A Diehard Romantic Picks the Flicks

Miss those nights at the drive-in, making out in front of the big screen? Looking for a good romance flick to rekindle that flame? Well before you put that log on the fire and pull the wine from the fridge, run to the video store for a romantic movie to set those embers glowing. Here are some suggestions from a diehard romantic - me! No, you won't see Casablanca listed here, but that's only because I'm a sucker for movies with happy endings.

The African Queen (1951) — This classic, set in Africa during World War I, stars Katharine Hepburn as English spinster Rose and Humphrey Bogart as the whiskey-swilling riverboat captain Charlie. When Rose's minister brother dies after a German attack on their village, Rose and Charlie escape down river. Rose plots to destroy a German gunboat controlling access to central Africa. To do so, the pair must travel a deadly stretch of the Ulunga river. During this treacherous journey, the mismatched pair fall in love. But will they succeed in their mission or die trying?
Ever After (1998) — In this Cinderella story for a new generation, Drew Barrymore stars as Daniella, a well-read, deeply passionate, 16th-century woman who takes charge of her own life after her father's death. Anjelica Huston plays Rodmilla, the stepmother with control of Daniella's inheritance and reasons for her wicked behavior. Also starring newcomer Dougray Scott as Prince Henry, this movie gives us a taste of the real life of a 16th-century woman. Will Daniella get her prince or be sold to Pierre le Pieu as his new wife?
Corrina, Corrina (1994) — Set in 1959, this movie stars Ray Liotta as Manny, a jingle writer for an ad agency, who buries himself in his work after the death of his wife. Meanwhile, his daughter Molly (Tina Majorino) refuses to speak. Then Manny hires a new housekeeper, Corrina, (Whoopi Goldberg), an out-of-work, college-educated black songwriter who teaches them both how to love again. But will the racial prejudices of the times ruin their chances for happiness?
Jerry Maguire (1996) — Jerry (Tom Cruise) is a successful, conscience-stricken, sports agent fired for writing a mission statement about the way his business should be run. Retaining one client, Rod Tidwell (Cuba Gooding Jr.), Jerry challenges his coworkers to take the leap with him. Dorothy Boyd (Renee Zellweger), who carries a torch for him, agrees. But Dorothy, a widow with a son, Ray (Jonathan Lipnicki), can't afford to work for free. She decides to leave, but Jerry, who has grown fond of Ray, and secondarily Dorothy, marries her to keep them around. Dorothy desperately wants to believe their marriage is real, but when she finally realizes what has happened, she leaves, accepting the blame for his error. Will Jerry realize he loves Dorothy before it's too late?
