"If you can't control your peanut butter, you can't expect to control your life." Bill Patterson, creator of the "Calvin and Hobbes" comic strip

If you love peanut butter, you're not alone. Peanut butter can be found in nearly 75 percent of homes in the United States, according to an article from the St. Petersburg (Fla.) Times. Together, Americans gobble up more than 500 million pounds of the stuff each year.

November is Peanut Butter Lovers' Month, dedicated to all things peanut butter. So take control of your life and your peanut butter ... here are a dozen ways to celebrate!

Get packing. Start planning now for a trip to Brundidge, Ala., to celebrate their annual Peanut Butter Festival on the last Saturday in October.

Learn something new. Do you know what former presidents Thomas Jefferson and Jimmy Carter have in common? They were both peanut farmers! Check out other fun facts from the National Peanut Board's Web site. You'll find that arachibutyrophobia is the fear that peanut butter will stick to the roof of your mouth, and that the horse on the television show "Mister Ed" was made to look like he was talking by using peanut butter.

Take a tip from Barry Goldwater. "If you don't mind smelling like peanut butter for two or three days, peanut butter is a damn good shaving cream," he is reported to have said after a camping trip.

Do something useful. Use peanut butter to remove gum from hair or glue from furniture, or to grease a car or truck axle.

Take a history lesson. Find out how peanut butter was invented.

Try something new. Peanut butter and jelly, anyone? That's too plain. Combine peanut butter with other foods for a non-traditional taste. Eat like a King with a fried peanut butter and banana sandwich, or combine peanut butter and Marshmallow Fluff to make a Fluffernutter sandwich. Spread it on apples or on celery with raisins on top. If you're feeling adventurous, try a peanut butter and bacon sandwich. Or tempt your palate with a more sophisticated pairing, such as Spicy Vegetarian Peanut Noodle Salad, Thai-Style Grilled Peanut Chicken, or Peanut Butter, Scallion, and Bacon Canapes.

Jam out. Listen to peanut butter-inspired music, such as Raffi's "Peanut Butter Sandwich," "Peanut Butter Jelly Time" on the Proud Family soundtrack, and music by Peanut Butter Conspiracy.

Treat yourself ... and your pet! Cook up some peanut butter cookies. While you're at it, whip up some peanut butter dog biscuits, too.

Share the love with a friend. Send an "I Love Peanut Butter" e-greeting or poem.

Get crafty. Use peanut butter and bread to make a bird feeder. Use the leftover jar to make a terrarium or a fanny pack.

Get messy in the kitchen. Make your own homemade peanut butter with this recipe.

Learn about allergies. Unfortunately, peanut butter is not safe for everyone. Find out more about peanut allergies.

How do you crave it?

Creamy or crunchy? According to the National Peanut Board, 60 percent of consumers prefer creamy peanut butter to crunchy. Also, most children and women prefer creamy, as do people who live on the East Coast. On the flip side, most men, and most West Coast residents, like crunchy better.

With jelly? 96 percent of people put the peanut butter on the bread first when they make a peanut-butter and jelly sandwich, according to the Skippy Web site.

By brand? Besides the well-known brands like Smuckers, Skippy, Peter Pan, and Jif, there are some lesser known makers as well. Try All Natural Peanut Butter & Co. or Village Organics Peanut Butter. Also, companies like Futters Nut Butters, Diamond Organics, and Krema/Crazy Richard's make classic peanut butter, but also peanut butter alternatives like almond butter.
