The Icing on the Cake

Keeping Cakes Themed:

• If you want to continue with a paw print theme for a Blue's Clues party, buy one large and small, round cake pan. Use the large cake pan once and the smaller one three times. Then arrange the three small cakes above the large one so it looks like a paw print. Buy blue frosting or make it with white frosting and blue food coloring. Blue and white candles add the finishing touch. Yellow icing can be used to write a birthday message on top.

• For a Powerpuff Girl party, it's easy to make a cake shaped like one of the girls. The easiest is the blue Powerpuff girl, Bubbles. Bake your cake in a round cake pan. Buy white frosting and mix it with food coloring to make a peachy skin color. After frosting the cake, use yellow-dyed whip cream to draw on the part of her hair. To make pigtails, bake two extra cupcakes and use yellow frosting. Place the cupcakes accordingly. Buy colorful candies to decorate. For example, red licorice can be used as a mouth and blue gumdrops for eyes.

Popular Parties for Kids

If you think kids get excited about their upcoming birthday parties, try looking at their parents. Adults get just as revved up when it comes to party planning for their kids.

Almost every kid has a favorite cartoon or super hero, which makes it easy to plan a theme. This year, kids have kept cartoons in the theming process. However, they've also introduced music groups, hot new movies, and even a book series. Take a peek at the top five children's party themes:

Blue's Clues: Young children have decided to step away from Sesame Street for a while, and Blue's Clues has taken over. Suitable for both boys and girls between ages 1 and 5. Click here for tips from Nick Jr. on how to throw a Blue's Clues party, or stop by the Blue's Clues shop at Amazon.Com.

Harry Potter: Not only has this book series become incredibly popular, but last fall's movie was a huge hit! So it's no surprise that kids are demanding it for their birthday parties. This is magic made modern. Both boys and girls between the ages of 5 and 12 can get into this theme. Get Harry Potter gear at Amazon.Com.

The Powerpuff Girls: Never has girl power been cooler! Cartoon cuteness mixes with bright colors to liven up any party. Great for girls between ages 4 to 12. Stock up on Powerpuff Girls party supplies at Amazon.Com.

Pokémon: While this theme tends to attract more boys, girls also like Pokémon. These cuddly furballs pack a lot of power into birthday parties. It's like super hero meets alien pets. Perfect for kids between the ages of 4 to 10. Visit the Pokemon Store at Amazon.Com for more ideas.

'N Sync: Music has crept into themed party domains everywhere thanks to this pop phenomenon. We're not just talking about throwing on an 'N Sync CD either. This theme tends to be more popular with girls, but boys who love pop music can get into it also. Works for kids between the ages of 8 and 15. Pick up a CD player for your little pop star, and get the party started!

That's A Wrap

How to creatively theme your gift wrap when you can't find what you want in stores:

• For a Blue's Clues theme, wrap gifts in plain white paper and use a paw print sponge and blue paint to decorate. Finish off with blue bows.

• For a Harry Potter theme, wrap gifts in either white or black paper. Using a star-shaped sponge and yellow paint, create a magic motif. Top off with glitter and yellow ribbons.

• For a Powerpuff Girls theme, use pink, green, and blue tissue paper to wrap. Buy some matching pompoms and ribbons to complete the package.

• For a Pokémon theme, wrap gifts in yellow tissue paper. Get creative and use black permanent marker or paint to draw Pikachu's face. If you don't have a steady hand, buy a pack of collector cards and glue them on in a collage or unique pattern.

• For an 'N Sync theme, buy a few teen magazines and select the best posters and pictures of the group to wrap gifts in.
