The Halloween Encyclopedia
The concept of Halloween as a holiday and cultural phenomenon worthy of serious study is only a few decades old, and only since the mid–1980s have scholars started to accept that Halloween’s place in modern society (especially in American society) merits attention beyond horror fiction and children’s books. The first book devoted solely to Halloween was published just over a century ago, and now, Halloween has its own encyclopedia.

We all know candy is the best part of Halloween, but we have to admit, the arts and crafts are so much fun.
Egg Carton Spiders
- Cut one cup from an egg carton.
- Poke 4 small holes on each side.
- Insert one pipe cleaner in each hole.
- Bend the pipe cleaners into leg shapes.
- Glue on some googly eyes!
Egg Carton Bats
- Cut three joined cups from an egg carton.
- Cut a large triangle out of one side of each wing cup.
- Cut the bottom of the other side of the wing cups into a pointy bat wing shape.
- Don't forget the googly eyes!
Jack-o'-lantern Banner
- Draw a jack-o'-lantern on orange construction paper.
- Cut out the shape. Leave a long enough stem to double back on itself.
- Fold the stem in half over a long piece of green string and glue or tape down.

Lots of little kids running around in the dark, what could go wrong? Here's how to avoid any holiday mishaps:
- Costumes should be fire-proof and easy to see in the dark.
- Children should always be accompanied by an adult.

- Check all candy thoroughly and throw away anything not in individual wrappers.
- Make sure children know not to go anywhere with strangers, and what to do about someone being unfriendly.

- Make sure your children know to dial 911 in emergencies, and that they know their home phone number.

Halloween's origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in).
The Celtic new year begins on Nov 1st, and on Oct 31st, the ghosts of the dead were thought to return to earth. Celts celebrated by building bonfires and wearing costumes.
Americans spend an estimated $6.9 billion annually on Halloween, making it the country's second largest commercial holiday.
