Masters of Doom: How Two Guys Created an Empire and Transformed
Pop Culture

things up with their influential and sometimes controversial
video game creations. The two post-adolescents met at a small

Ready,
Aim ... 3-D Shooting Games |
 |
With just two health units left, you scramble
around a corner ... only to be greeted by an armed guard with
a cannon. Your only chance is to shoot first.
The invention of 3-D
graphic games gave us the ability to see through our own eyes
what it would be like to save the galaxy from evil invaders.
Since then, these games have spawned newer versions with graphics
so realistic, they'll having you dodging digital bullets.
Let's take a look back at the titles that created one of the
biggest genres in gaming history.
•
Wolfenstein 3-D
ID
Software made waves with this game in 1992 and has produced
similar titles that have since been elevated to cult status.
When ID distibuted Wolfenstein 3-D as a free demo,
eager gamers snatched it up and shared it online, sending
the PC-gaming world into a frenzy.
•
Doom
If you ever thought you'd be a stranded Marine on a planet
filled with bloodthirsty hellspawn,
then this game is for you. Released after the success of the
Wolfenstein series, ID software pushed their graphics engine
even further with larger worlds and more menacing enemies.
The size of the levels made gaming challenging and fun once
again. Doom's popularity was also heightened by its ability
to be played online with others in what became known as death
matches. The game became so popular, it was released for the
Nintendo 64 and Playstation consoles. Other 3-D games would
follow suit.
•
Quake
With yet another stranded, gun-wielding Marine desperate to
get out home alive, Quake may have looked like a more polished
version of Doom, but this time you had to fight your way through
ravaged planets and space stations. The game broke new ground
by setting the standard for death
match abilities. In college dorms, nights were often were
filled with the staccato sounds of chain guns, followed by
shouts of joy and screams of frustration. Exams took second
place to being king of the hill ... or the neighborhood.
• Unreal
Catapulted into fame by online gamers, Unreal set a new standard
for death matches. With its own championship
games, offering winners prizes including cars and cash,
Unreal has won countless awards from the E3
shows and popular gaming Web sites. The game has amassed a
huge cult following with several fan
sites on the Web. MTV recently followed Unreal Tournament
champ Johnathan "Fatl1ty"
Wendel, an online gamer and cyber athlete, on its show True
Life.
•
Half-Life
When Half Life was published by Sierra in 1998, it won several
awards for its phenomonal Valve-team
designed graphics engine, bringing first-person games into
the 21st century.
