Itching for an Internship?

Oh, the glamorous life of an intern. You spend the days working your fingers to the bone and putting blood, sweat, and tears into everything you do. Sounds like fun, right?

Why do people want internships so badly anyway? Why do they fight tooth and nail for this coveted title. It's certainly not for barrels of cash; most positions don't pay. But the experience is worth much more than money. Whether you're a student or just looking to broaden your professional horizons, you'll meet influential people who'll make great contacts in the future.

But first, you'll need to beat those eager hounds snapping at your heels to the front of the line. Here are some tips on crushing the competition and snagging that job early!

Look for leads. When researching your possibilities, don't miss out on any opportunity. Use all your sources — family, friends, classmates, professors, libraries, newspaper classifieds, and career centers. After finding internships that interest you, complete an application and hope for the all-important interview!
Don't you delay. Hear the clock ticking? Internship deadlines will sneak up on you. For summer positions, applications may be due as early as November. Others have rolling deadlines. Either way, applying early increases your chances and pushes you ahead of all those procrastinators.

Prepare your papers. Keep your most updated resume, cover letter, recommendations, and work samples on hand. You'll save time by having these materials ready, and your preparedness will impress future employers.

Cater to the company. Showcase your skills by researching the company before applying. Be ready to explain your interest and how you can benefit the business. You may want to customize your cover letter to fit the company's needs as well. Employers will be struck with your intensity and knowledge — feel your foot wedging in the door yet?

•Exercise your enthusiasm. Persistence pays off. Be sure to follow up any letters, phone calls, or interviews with personal notes. It may seem pushy, but your name will never get lost in those piles of applications.
