Festival
In Cannes
Filming on location in France during the 1999 Cannes Film
Festival, Henry Jaglom goes behind the scenes to explore how
movies get made —and unmade. He would know — he's
been making them for decades now. In this one, he takes an
Altman-meets-Cassavetes approach to his subject ... If Festival
in Cannes is less emotionally involving than 1997's Déjà
Vu (arguably his best), it still provides a fine showcase
for a talented cast ... Kathleen C. Fennessy

Each year in France, the 10-day Cannes
Film Festival takes place to preview anticipated movies
of the season, to celebrate film achievements, and to allow
celebrities to fashionably shine on the red carpet.
However, film critics like Roger
Ebert called the films offered at this year's 56th Annual
Cannes Film Festival the worst in the past 30 years.
This year, Gus
Van Sant's Elephant came out as the big winner,
with
Jeanne Moreau receiving a Lifetime Achievement Award.
The only American film to be honored at Cannes
this year, Elephant
centers around a violent incident that rocks both the
students and the faculty at a Portland,
Ore., high school.
Van Sant was the only American represented in this year's
winner's circle. Last year's American winners included:
Roman
Polanski for The
Pianist, Paul
Thomas Anderson for Punch
Drunk Love, and Michael
Moore for Bowling
for Columbine.
Despite
the disappointing film lineup and fears of low turnout
because of recent American-French relations, American
celebrities still came out to shine in France
to promote their films.
Nicole
Kidman, promoting the yet-to-be released Dogville,
showed up dateless in a red-patterned Christian LaCroix
gown. Jada
Pinkett Smith appeared, sans Will Smith, to support
The
Matrix Reloaded. Other celebrities that appeared
at this year's Cannes were Adrian
Brody — seen nuzzling Kidman on the red carpet
— and Penelope
Cruz, sans Tom Cruise. Meg
Ryan and Director Steven
Soderbergh judged in the Hollywood sector of the Cannes
panel. Other judges on the nine-member panel included
French FilmmakerPatrice
Chereau and Bosnian Director Danis
Tanovic.
Publicists were in a fury to make sure that Kidman and
Cruz didn't run into each other on the red
carpet. Luckily, all cat fights were avoided.
